Personality Checklist for Online Influencers – Do You Have What it Takes?

Why do you need a Personality Checklist?

  • Ellen DeGeneres is funny and she likes to dance.
  • Gary Vaynerchuk (Gary V) is authentic and he likes to curse.
  • Steve Harvey is also funny and he likes to tell inspirational, personal stories about his life.

Each one of these popular entertainers has an online ‘character’ that may, or may not, be the same person they are in real life.

I doubt Gary V curses in front of his wife and 2 kids the way he curses on his podcast or YouTube videos.

Nevertheless, you will be better on camera if you have an idea of WHO you want to BE before you decide WHAT you want to say.

Did you know?  Your brain processes online images exactly the same as in real life!

Think of it like going to visit your in-laws:  you probably wear your nice shoes, you comb your hair and maybe you even take a bath 🙂

Your online personality is little bit like that; you GET to select the BEST aspects of your personality to show to the world.

And, unlike going to your in-laws, you DON’T have to be all prim and proper – you can be wacky or funny or silly if that’s what your audience likes.

Develop YOUR Online Character

The Personality Checklist is the tool we use to discover unique and interesting aspects of your personality you SHOULD display online.

The Checklist is best completed with a friend or co-worker who knows you fairly well.

The exercise will take about 10 minutes to fill out the Checklist.

You should spend another 30 minutes discussing your findings and then you’ll be ready to get started.

Like Ellen, Gary and Steve, you’ll continue to learn and develop your online character as you spend time in front of the camera.

Who Needs the Personality Checklist?

1) Small Biz Owners

Most of our small biz owners work closely with their customers:

  • Dentists & doctors
  • Real estate agents
  • Sports & music venues
  • Restaurants
  • Bankers and financial advisors

If the business owner is able to speak on video with their customer; that is often the most emotionally-rich and authentic video to persuade new customers to click-to-call or visit your website.

2) Manager

Maybe the best person to appear on social media videos promoting the small business is a manager – perhaps franchised restaurants and bars or fitness centers.

Managers may be the voice and the face of the small business in the community.

3) Front-line team member

Perhaps the best person to gather a video testimonial is the one who 1st greets the customer or checks them out before they leave the business.

Help this person develop their online persona by using the checklist.

4) Happy customer

Finally, the customer may want to role-play or prepare before they give you a video testimonial.

We could spend 10 or 15 minutes going through the checklist with them to prepare for a 2 minute video testimonial.

How Should a Small Business use the Personality Checklist?

Sit down with the printed checklist (we prefer print to screens) with the person who will appear in the video.

Get the Personality Checklist

Make this a 2-person task. Better to talk through these questions on the checklist:

  1. How would you describe yourself?
  2. What is your favorite hobby?  How do you spend your free time?.
  3. What are you passionate about?  What gets you excited?
  4. What is your pet peeve?
  5. What is your best trait?  Do you have an outstanding quality?
  6. Do have any ‘odd’ behaviors you’re willing to share?
  7. How would you your FRIENDS OR FAMILY describe you? .
  8. How would your FRIENDS OR FAMILY describe your passions?
  9. How would your FRIENDS OR FAMILY describe your pet peeve?
  10. What would YOUR FRIENDS OR FAMILY describe as your best trait?
  11. How would your YOUR FRIENDS OR FAMILY describe any ‘odd’ behaviors you have?  Are you willing to share?

There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers. No answers are better than any other answers. 

The idea to get the person who will be on video to think and refect about about how they want to show up on video – and then emphasize that trait.

“They say a mirror can add 10 pounds; well, a video sucks 25% of your energy.”

It’s true; if you’ve naturally got a big voice and move when you talk, then you’ll do well on video.

But, if your voice is quiet and your mannerisms restrained then we’ll have to work a bit to emphasize your best qualities on video.

For example, if you ARE quiet and reserved but you have something interesting to say, we may simply bring the camera closer to your face and make sure we have good audio.

When Does the Small Business Use the Personality Checklist?

The Personality Checklist is a training tool.

It takes perhaps 10 minutes for 1 person to fill it out (it’s 1 page) and another 10-15 minutes to discuss with another person (perhaps your manager, boss or fellow worker).

Use the Personality Checklist anytime you have a new team member who needs training.
